Octopus Fight
The Canibalistic Octopus Fight On July 20, 2014, while snorkeling off ‘Happy Hill’ headland on the island of St Vincent in St Vincent and the Grenadines I was taking coral photographs from above, looking straight down at the corals, when a disturbance in my periphery vision caught my attention. One Caribbean Reef Octopus (Octopus briareus) was chasing another in mid-water. They were moving fast, with the one in front expelling ink and taking evasive maneuvers. Very quickly, the pursuing octopus reached out with a leading arm and captured the other octopus. There was a moment of blood and entrails exploding as the pursuing octopus completely engulfed the other. I could see a multitude of arms trying to escape a bell shaped hold, but escape did not happen this day. I watched and folled the captor ocopus, which settled down to the reef bottom in about 15 feet of water and kept its prey hightly held in a bell like hold while it presumably consumed it. The Caribbean Reef Ocotpus is not generally known to hunt in the daytime, to be territorial, nor cannibalistic, so this was an awesome event to witness.
